"Inside Klangkapsel / Sound Capsule 013 you will find yourself in a land full of extremes named Japan. The name of the recording is: Geräuschprinzessin. Dunkelgrau / Sound Princess. Dark Grey. A well-known Japanese enterprise invited numerous industrial musicians, minimalist composers, noise (Japanoise, Japanoizu) artists and sound designers to create special soundtracks for the Otohime, the Sound Princess or Geräuschprinzessin. This is something completely unknown in most countries. Yet, contemporary Japan seems to be full of these hidden princesses. Otohime is an acoustic background, a wall of sound for toilets in public and private places. Especially Japanese women try to avoid at all costs that other women or men may hear their sounds on a toilet. There are also portable sound princesses, and they exist as apps too. This invention has also an ecological and economical aspect: Less water is wasted. One of the invited musicians was also Gerhard Hallstatt. Very probably tens of thousands of Japanese citizens already got to know this hypnotic and monotonous Geräuschprinzessin that is dressed in dark grey - without knowing its Austrian author. Gerhard Hallstatt recorded other sound princesses in other colours, other clothes too. Oto means sound, ohimesame means princess - but in mythology, Otohime is also a daughter of the Japanese sea god." (Gerhard Hallstatt 18.02.2023)
