Eiche aus Eisen

about

"Klangkapsel / Sound Capsule 030 is the song Eiche aus Eisen (Iron Oak). This was the Allerseelen contribution for the CD compilation Oak Folk published in December 2010 by Ahnstern and Aorta. It came out a couple of days before the live performances of Agalloch and Allerseelen at the Pacific West Coast in Seattle, Portland, San Francisco and Los Angeles. The Upper Austrian lyrics by Gerhard Hallstatt are about a wood of oaks where the protagonist named "I" is in quest of the only oak there that consists of iron. There is also a thunderstorm, and the lightning is doing the same - searching for this iron oak too. Who will be first? Oaks are said to attract lightnings, iron of course too. Even more an iron oak. Dozens of legends deal with this close connection between lightnings and oaks. Are these myths, are they reality? Is it mere fiction, superstition - or science? And who is really this "I" in poems, in songs? Maybe this "I" is the oak or the iron or the lightning - or all of them? Am I "I"? In this song also the sky consists of iron and oak leaves. Does this grey sky also mean heaven? Himmel in German means both. One may find "fifty shades of grey" in these "oak folk" lyrics: They might be deadly serious by expressing a desire for suicide. But at the same time it is also a pun, ein Wortspiel, a play on words as the German words Eiche, oak, and Eisen, iron, are quite close to each other. The music itself - with the catchy and joyful bass and guitar riffs by Marcel P. (Miel Noir, Werra) - has this time a certain affinity to a couple of songs that Gerhard Hallstatt wrote for his friends Sturmpercht in Salzburg Land. The compilation Oak Folk - with Agalloch, Sturmpercht, Werra and many others - is unfortunately sold out but you may still find copies on Discogs." (Gerhard Hallstatt 15.10.2023)
